I hope this email finds you, your family and staff well and healthy.
When we come together and are working for a common cause, the sense of the strangeness of it all will soon pass. We'll become focused on the day to day rather then the news of the day. Over time, the silver linings of the recent past will become evident; We'll be working in a safer environment for staff and patients; there will be a renewed energy in getting back to "work;" and the sense of community will be stronger then ever.
I would like to offer a few important perspectives (and a couple of silver linings) gathered from discussions with dental professionals & dental industry analyst both locally and nationally.
- Dentists are well positioned for a strong recovery. While many industries are faced with unprecedented uncertainty, people will always need dentists. A lot of our patients have been deferring treatment. Deferring treatment leads to more acute care. Patients can forgo major purchases, vacations, etc., but dental issues are hard to ignore. Engaging smiles will remain to be a necessary asset in the re-newed workforce.
- More dentists are now considering changes in how they practice. Recently, I've had conversations with dentists who have been casually considering a future practice transition. They are now thinking about moving up their timetables. For these dentists, retirement or a change in practice style represent a departure from the past. Downtime is allowing dentists to have conversations about change and how to prepare. If this describes you, we can discuss your thoughts, ideas and goals of what your practice might look like moving forward. We can discuss options and help develop a game plan for the upcoming wave of care.
- Dental practices continue to be recognized as a low financial risk. Our team of experts report that lenders continue to recognize the stability of our industry, despite the crisis. This means that funding options for buyers will likely remain favorable in lending programs. Further, we also see that the disruption appears to be displacing a segment of younger and mid-career dentists, who will seek to use available funding to establish their own practices rather than returning to non-ownership status.
